In this post, I’m going to be detailing the different types of product photography that I think you need for your small business. This is so you know exactly what to ask for when getting in touch with a photographer for your product photography needs.
I offer 3 different styles of product photography and that includes:
E-commerce
Lifestyle
Still-life/Studio
These genres are all different and this is what they mean.
E-commerce product photography means shooting against a white backdrop. These images are clean, well-lit and showcase the product in it’s entirety. This style of imagery can be used on the Shop page of your website and can also be used as cut-outs for PR opportunities. The main purpose of it is to show what your product is clearly and concisely.
Lifestyle product photography may be described as in-situ or context photography and it essentially means that your product should be featured in a scene where it looks the most at home. For example, if you’re a food brand wanting lifestyle photography, you may want a scene constructed in a kitchen with models using the products if that’s the vibe you’re going for. Lifestyle photography can be shot indoors or out on location. It’s all about creating a scene so that your customers can see what your product will look like in a setting that relates to them. It also means that they’re more likely to envision your product in their own home/setting and will be more inclined to buy if they can see where your product fits into their space.
Any images that I create in my home studio that involves patterned backdrops and props, I class as creative still-life/studio photography. This is where I can get really imaginative with product placement, lighting, colours, backdrops and props. This style of photography is great if you’re looking to build really awesome visuals, create conversations with your audience and get that high-end level feel to your photos.
And there you have it. 3 types of product photography you need for your small business. These images can be used across a range of platforms and marketing channels which is what you need from a product shoot. Having a versatile, personality-filled and professional bank of images will take your brand to the next level.
