How to be more confident on camera

How to be more confident on camera

Being confident on camera doesn’t come naturally to most of us. It takes a lot of practice, coaching and guts. In this post, I’m going to be sharing some things you can do to become more confident on camera.

It’s all in the prep

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. The key to success in photoshoots comes down to planning. If you haven’t prepared, how are you going to know what to do? How can you be confident in the result if you haven’t prepped? Here are some things you can do before you turn the camera on:

Make yourself look and feel good by putting on a smashing outfit and doing your hair and make-up.

Have a few poses or image ideas in your head before shooting (or make a Pinterest board).

Take a few deep breaths while standing in front of a mirror and tell yourself you look beautiful.

Put on a playlist that is empowering, energetic and uplifting.

Take one last glance in the mirror to check for lipstick stains and out of place hairs.

Turn on the camera

Now that you’ve got yourself ready, you can turn on the camera. Here are a few things you can do when shooting to keep your confidence levels up:

Keep moving during the shoot so that you don’t get stiff or uncomfortable.

Have a photographer there that specialises in photographing people. They’ll make you feel reassured and comfortable, plus they know what poses look good on camera and what don’t.

Keep eye contact with the camera so that whoever sees your images afterwards (even if it’s just you) can connect with you.

If the photographer is excited about the images and wants to show you the back of the camera, don’t be scared to take a look.

Keep drinking water during shooting – it can be exhausting so keep those energy levels up and stay hydrated.

Post-shoot

You’ve completed the prep and done the shoot. 2/3rds of your job is done! And can I just say, you smashed it. But now those parts are over, here are a few things you can do to keep that confidence boosted:

Embrace that the images might not turn out exactly how you want them to (especially if you’re doing them yourself or picked a photographer that hasn’t had a lot of practice).

Let go of perfectionism, just remember to be true to yourself.

We all have insecurities and that doesn’t make yours insignificant but your audience isn’t looking at them. They’re focused on the fabulous human in front of them.

Practice, practice, practice. By doing shoots regularly you’ll feel more confident within yourself and you’ll also know what went well previously and what to work on in future. That might mean hiring a professional tog or choosing a specific location rather than a wall in your living room.

Get comfortable sharing your fabulous self with the world and open yourself up to compliments. You’re amazing and deserve to know it!
